Fine Art Photography
Andrew English is a photographer and psychologist who resides in San Francisco. Andrew also has a very poor attention span. He is fascinated with our subjective interpretation of what is beautiful and what is dark, and how instinctively we manipulate the world around us to find our subject’s inherent beautiful side or its more dark nature. He employs infrared photography to turn the dark to beautiful, and night vision photography to turn the beautiful to dark. He can be found wandering his neighborhood, the Mission, with his infrared camera in one hand, his night vision camera in the other, and a burrito in the third. Yes, Andre has three hands. Please, do NOT stare!
Infrared light has a wavelength that is longer than visible light, thus falling outside our normal visible spectrum. There is beautiful clarity and brilliance found within this part of the light spectrum. My work harnesses the mesmerizing characteristics from this unseen light. Infrared photographs are especially striking when captured during the middle of the day (high-noon sun). The images often appear to be half negative, quarter normal, and a quarter solarized. The wide array of tones and colors found in a finished image is produced by the varying amounts of light reflecting off of each subject. It's particularly visible in the shadows where the bright sunlight turns to shade, and, in the darker pictures, you can actually see things that are invisible to the naked eye. We see the world not for what it is, but for what we need it to be.
