God of Carnage, January 1 -29, 2012, By Yasmina Reza
A Tony Award-winning play that was first produced in English in London on 25 March 2008, in a translation by Christopher Hampton. The play is about two pairs of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos.
In 2009, God of Carnage received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and a Tony Award for Best Play. It is the third-longest running play of the 2000s (after The 39 Steps and August: Osage County). A Hawaii premiere.
Spring Awakening, March 8-25, 2012, By Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater
A rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for a while due to its portrayal of masturbation, abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.
Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards. A Hawaii premiere.
Dividing the Estate, May 10-27, 2012, By Horton Footea??a??a??
Set in the fictional town of Harrison, Texas in 1987, the play focuses on the Gordons, a clan of malcontents ruled by octogenarian matriarch Stella that must prepare for an uncertain future when plunging real estate values and an unexpected tax bill have a negative impact on the family fortune. Stella's children - predatory Mary Jo, complacent Lucille, and alcoholic Lewis - engage in a debate about whether or not they should divide the estate while their mother is still alive in order to ensure themselves financial independence. The play received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. A Hawaii premiere.
Item Special Note
The theatre annually produces a mainstage season of six or more productions, each selected from recent Broadway or off-Broadway offerings, with a two-fold purpose: to entertain island audiences and to offer stimulating and educational opportunities in theatre arts production to our community's ever-growing population of actors and craftsmen. The annual season runs from September through August. Occasional special projects are produced in other community venues. MVT's Studio Series offers special attractions from time to time on dark nights during the mainstage run.
