Item Description

Sea Debris, one of the three Daido Loori photographs appearing in this year's auction, is from the Point Lobos, California exhibit. They were all taken on a single day, October 26, 1999 with Fujichrome Provia 400F Professional film. A Nikon camera equipped with medium focal length was used to make the exposures.

The photographs are part of Daido Loori's (1931-2009) collection, Hearing with the Eye (2004), published by and available at Dharma Communications. Daido Loori said of the images that "Using photographs to illustrate the commentary on Master Dogen's Teachings of the Insentient follows a precedent established in 1978. At the time I was working with my teacher Taizan Maezumi Roshi on the book The Way of Everyday Life, using photographs as visual capping phrases - verses used in Zen to reveal and complement the essential point or heart of a koan. In this book, three capping images visually summarize the essence of the teaching contained in each section."

John Daido Loori, Roshi was one of Western Zen’s leading lights, as well as an award-winning photographer whose work has been published in leading photography magazines, including Aperture and Time Life. He was the founder and spiritual leader of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism and abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery, one of North America’s major training monasteries. He was also president of Dharma Communications, a right-action enterprise devoted to making Buddhist teachings widely available through the production of video tapes, books, meditation supplies, and a quarterly journal, Mountain Record.

Devoted to maintaining the authenticity of these traditions, Roshi was known for his unique adaptation of traditional Buddhism into a modern context, particularly with regard to the arts, the environment, social action, and the use of modern media as a vehicle of spiritual training and social change. He had over one hundred one-person and group shows both in North America and abroad.
