Item Description

Take Paris Review editor Lorin Stein out to lunch and enjoy a stimulating discussion of Henry Green's novel Loving, alone or with friends.

"A movement over in the bed attracted her attention. She turned slow. She saw a quick stir beside the curls under which Mrs Jack's head lay asleep, she caught sight of someone else's hair as well, and it was retreating beneath silk sheets. A man. Her heart hammered fit to burst her veins. She gave a little gasp."

A tiny modern masterpiece, an upstairs-downstairs farce, and a peaen to sexual desire in all its messy reverberations, Henry Green's Loving is one of the great postwar English novels. It depicts several days in the life of a grand estate in Ireland during World War II, days filled with secret or suppressed passions, angers, shifting allegiances, and provocative half-understandings. As Green explained to Terry Southern in their 1958 Paris Review interview: "People strike sparks off each other; that is what I try to note down."

Explore Loving over lunch at the restaurant of your choice with Lorin and up to five friends.  The setting can be as refined as Mas (Farmhouse) or as reliable as The Paris Review's cantine Le Cercle Rouge. You take care of the tab and Lorin will take care of the discussion. A mutually convenient date will be arranged with the auction winner.
