It depicts several days in the life of a grand estate in Ireland during World War II, days filled with secret or suppressed passions, angers, shifting allegiances, and provocative half-understandings. As Green explained to Terry Southern in their 1958 Paris Review interview: "People strike sparks off each other; that is what I try to note down."
