Star of the silent film era, Clara Bow personified the "Roaring Twenties", becoming world famous as the 'IT' girl from the film of the same name, and is described as its leading sex symbol. However, this accolade did not come easy to Clara.
She rose from a background of poverty determined to become successful in motion pictures. However, Clara was considered socially undesirable and was shunned by the Hollywood elite for her bohemian lifestyle, thick Brooklyn accent and 'dreadful manners'.
Paradoxically, she was praised by critics for her beauty, vitality and enthusiasm. Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount, said "She danced even when her feet weren't moving. Some part of her was always in motion, if only her great, rolling eyes. It was an elemental magnetism, an animal vitality, that made her the center of attraction in any company."
Clara Bow proved anything could be achieved no matter where you start in life - she paved her own road to success with hard work, determination, the desire to succeed and the courage of her convictions - despite an abusive and loveless childhood.
This work was inspired by one of Clara's promotional photographs of the time. I wanted to capture her strength, confidence and self-awareness and blend it with the child-like vulnerability and fragility that always lay just beneath the surface of this remarkable lady.

About the Artist
Tracie Koziura has been exhibiting her art internationally since 2008. Her biggest passion is wolves which are the main subject of her work although she also enjoys creating a variety of other subjects including landscapes, portraits, wildlife and domestic animals. Specialising in pastels, charcoal and tinted graphite, Tracie's images are realistic, inviting the viewer to connect with the subjects character and inner spirit. Despite being a relative newcomer to the world of art her work has been described as sensitive, adventurous and alive.
"I love the freedom creating art gives me; to explore; to study; to learn about the world around me and all that exists within it. Art has opened my eyes to so many things I had taken for granted - unique subtleties I had been too busy to notice. When I paint, the world comes to a halt; the details of life come into focus. It is truly addictive, this desire to create!"
