About the Artist
Hideo Noda was born on December 13, 1922 on a farm near Phoenix Arizona. His father died in an automobile accident when he was nine years old. Shortly thereafter, his mother moved her six children to a small village near Hiroshima, Japan. When he was 11, Hideo did his first watercolor painting and learned oil painting when he was 17.
Hideo was drafted into the Japanese army in 1943 and went to China. In 1945, he was caught by the Russian army and was a prisoner of war in Siberia for two years. Hideo has written many moving poems about this experience. He returned to Japan in 1947 and moved to the United States in 1951.
In the United States, Hideo attended San Francisco City college and earned a living as a busboy and cleaning houses. In 1956, he took an oil painting class at UCLA where, after briefly working with Hideo, the teacher told him not to come to school anymore. The teacher felt Hideo was wasting his money and time. "Nobody needs to teach you now," the teacher said, "paint in your own style".
From that point on, Hideo stopped going to school and started to develop various techniques and styles of painting. He continues to create art to this day, both on the computer and on canvas.Hideo's painting "studio" is reached by climbing a ladder onto his roof, when the weather permits. His computer skills were learned in the graphic designer class at Venice Skills Center, a low-cost job training facility in Venice, California, operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Hideo has sold his art to collectors and has exhibited in various galleries around Los Angeles
