This image of David and Saul evokes the initial love between the shepherd and the king, suggests Saul's nature, and portends their future enmity.
Raphael Bouganim was born in Morocco, the son of the Chief Rabbi of the mellah of Esouaria (Jewish quarter). He ran away from home and was taken via Norway to Israel, where he studied at Bezalel Institue and with Leo Roth. He came to the US at 17 and built a loyal following in Philadelphia, where his stained glass windows are installed in Beth Sholom synagogue of Elkins Park, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. He was a prolific painter with unending techniques in all media. His favorite subjects were his childhood memories translated into strong, colorful images, many of them imagined settings of Biblical stories.
