Item Description

Limited edition commemorative United States Congressional Plate from the Millenium Series, by Tiffany & Co. Signed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, this Tiffany & Co. plate was created for the 200th anniversary of the first meeting of Congress in Washington, D.C. Be the talk of the town with this priceless piece!

A History

In November of 1800, the United States Congress first met in the partially completed U.S. Capitol. During the next half century of immense national growth, the population of the United States more than quadrupled, and Congress grew proportionately. By 1851, the Capitol was too small for the larger House and Senate, so construction began on two vast new wings that more than doubled the size of the building.

Completed in the 1850s, these two new wings were architectural statements of Americans' pride in their nation, decorated with elaborate frescoes and richly colored floor tiles. These colors and designs have now inspired the United States Congressional Plate Series.

The ornate patterns of the borders can been throughout the 1850s extensions. The border colors have been used for the last two centuries by architects, artists and craftsmen to decorate the ceilings, walls and floors of the U.S. Capitol.
