Roger Frisch joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1974 and was appointed associate concertmaster in 1995. He appears frequently as soloist with orchestras in this country and in Europe. In recent years, his solo repertoire has ranged from Baroque to modern, including the Korngold Concerto, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, Brahms’ Double Concerto, DvoÅÂÂA?ák’s Romance, Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Pärt’s Fratres, along with many other works. He has performed more than 25 solo works with the Orchestra, most recently Corigliano’s The Red Violin: Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra and John Williams’ Theme from Schindler’s List. Frisch made his Carnegie Hall solo debut in 1992 and was concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony during the 1994-95 season.

A dedicated chamber musician, Frisch was a founding member of the Minneapolis Artists Ensemble, with which he recorded an acclaimed version of the Hummel Quintet, as well as several 20th-century works. Since 1997 he has performed extensively throughout the United States and in Ukraine with the Kairos Trio, whose other members are flutist Michele Antonello Frisch and pianist Herbert Johnson. He has appeared as a soloist at the MasterWorks Festival and the Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory, where he has also been a faculty member. For five seasons he was concertmaster and solo violinist with the Wintergreen Music Festival. Frisch was invited to perform in China in 2007 and 2008, where he played recitals and performed as soloist with orchestras in Beijing, Shanghai and additional cities. His other recent performances abroad include a series of violin/cello duo recitals in Slovakia in February 2008.

Frisch received his early musical training from his father, who was the longtime associate concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music under Henry Meyer of the LaSalle Quartet and a master’s degree from Indiana University, where he studied with Josef Gingold. He is a prizewinner of both the Hermann Violin Competition and the Coleman International Chamber Music Competition.

A sought-after coach of young musicians auditioning for professional symphony orchestras, Frisch gives seminars around the country addressing techniques for audition preparation. He authored the downloadable book The Orchestra Audition: How to Prepare, the newest edition of which was published in 2011. He is an artist in residence faculty member at Northwestern College in St. Paul.
