Item Description

"Our group used a variety of printing methods: monotype, monoprint, drypoint, carborundum print, and multiple plate prints. Monotype is an additive and subtractive method that involves applying and removing ink to, and from, an unworked surface to achieve the desired image. Conversely, an image can be created by the addition, without removal, of ink or paint with brushes, fingers, and other tools. Monoprint involves inking over an image or texture that is permanently on the plate. Carborundum printing uses silicon carbide powder mixed with an adhesive that, when applied directly to the plate and inked, creates a richly textured surface. Drypoint is the manual incision (rather than by acid-as in an etching) of a line, or series of lines, into a plate. The incision raises a burr off the plate that captures the ink, creating a soft line. Multi plate prints - 2 or 3 plates consisting of different images and/or colors, are used to create a single print after multiple passes through the press.

The 9 artists in my group used one, some, or all of the above methods in creating their prints for the 30/30 project. Each artist was given an 11" x 13" Plexiglas plate, or plates, and asked to come up with an image for printing. These highly process driven methods, (unfamiliar to most in the group), required that all work be created and executed in the Print Studio. The final works on view are the product of multiple sessions involving a great deal of experimentation, innovation, and commitment on the part of the artists."
