Item Description

Though he has published hundreds of mountain photos in previous books, Mountain Ranges of Colorado will prove to be John Fielder's definitive photographic essay about Colorado mountains. Fifteen years in the making, these images were created on the most remote and strenuous backpacking excursions of Fielder's career as a nature photographer. For the first time in any publication, this book delineates and celebrates the 28 distinct mountain ranges that define Colorado's Southern Rockies. Made with 65 pounds of large-format camera equipment, this collection of 200 mountain images manifests infinite and primal details not possible with any other camera. Rock, ice, tundra, and water-the world above treeline where Fielder loves life the most-come alive with incredible clarity and color. Fielder's text, addressing such topics as how the Sawatch Range differs geologically from the Needles, and why the Gore is so much harder to hike than the Park, helps readers to appreciate the special personality of each. This tribute to mountains is a must for Fielder fans and lovers of the Colorado mountain experience.

About John Fielder:

For more than 30 years, John Fielder has been hauling his large format camera gear into Colorado' wildest places by foot, skis, and raft.  He founded Westcliffe Publishers in 1981 in order to share his work and that of many other nature photographers and writers through exhibit0format books and guide books.  He teaches photography workshops to adults and children in Colorado and around the world, and is active in Colorado environmental and conservation affairs.  John lives in Summit County.

This book was published on the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964, and it is intended to celebrate not just the miracle of the southern Rockies of Colorado, but America's best device to preserve them, the National Wilderness Preservation System.

John Fielder is the author of 39 exhibit format and guide books, including Colorado's all-time best-selling regional title, Colorado 1870-2000, William H. Jackson/John Fielder.
