Item Description

Rachel Wharton is a deputy editor of Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn magazines with a master’s degree in Food Studies from New York University, where she focused her research on sustainable agriculture and food culture (with a minor in tacos). She has 15 years of experience as a writer, starting her career with fisheries, water issues, coastal life--and fried oysters--in North Carolina, where she grew up. Before joining the Edibles, she spent four-and-half years working as a features food reporter at the New York Daily News. She won a 2010 James Beard food journalism award for stories in Edible Brooklyn, while her profile of Russ & Daughters in Edible Manhattan was included in the book 2010 Best Food Writing. She also hosts a weekly segment on behalf of Edible Manhattan for NY1.

A day with Rachel may include:

Like many reporters and editors, there is no normal day for me. Most days I am editing a story on cheesecake, writing one on nanobreweries, blogging about some taco I ate or updating address details and other mundane details on our website. But on really good days, I'll spend at least be out in all corners of the city watching bakers, farmers or coffee roasters do their thing, while asking them too many questions, sometimes with an Edible photographer or NY1 producer in tow.
