Item Description

Beautifully framed art piece which is part of "Amulets," an exhibition presenting the traditional arts of Ethiopia created by Jewish Ethiopian women living in Israel. The bird is a symbol for freedom. It represents the longing for the Ethiopian people to live freely in Israel. All the stitching is handmade. In 1984 and 1991 with the support of the Israeli government, the majority of Ethiopian Jews living in Ethiopia immigrated to Israel to escape social and physical hardships. Miki Shapiro, a fashion designer, developed the Almaz factory in Lod, Israel to help employ the new immigrants. The goal of the factory is to help the Ethiopian Israelis integrate into modern Israeli life and preserve the traditional art of Ethiopian embroidery. The "Amulets" Exhibition was created to display the work of this community to a global audience, to celebrate and keep alive the talent of this important tradition.
