The Nevada Northern Railway Museum, established in 1905, is a National Historic Landmark; the jewel in picturesque Ely, Nevada, halfway between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City (about 240 miles, with flights from Las Vegas' (McCarran Airport to Ely on Great Lakes Airlines). This "living," interactive Museum features operating steam and diesel locomotive trains, with approximately 60 acres of original, authentic grounds, track and buildings to explore. Guided and self-guided tours are complimentary with train rides. Trains run year-round, except March, to the delight of both children and adults. You can even ride in the cab with the Engineer -- or stay a night in a caboose. Of all preserved railroads in the country, The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is considered to be "the best...bar none" by the Smithsonian.
