Item Description

Albuquerque's 10th annual celebration of Klezmer music & dance is coming up next weekend February 17 -19.

Presented by Nahalat Shalom, 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW

The winning bidder will receive a pair of tickets to Saturday night's concert (February 18, 7pm) featuring the All-Star Klezmer Trio of Joel Rubin, Steve Greenman and Pete Rushefsky.

For the uninitiated, Klezmer music is a musical tradition that originated in the 'shtetl' (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as 'klezmorim', performed at joyful events, particularly weddings and other celebrations.

Over the past 30 years or so, the music has had a remarkable comeback.  There are now traditional and non-traditional Klezmer Bands in all corners of the world influenced by its Eastern European roots, gypsy melodies and Balkan music as well as jazz and folk music from around the world.

Since 1995, Congregation Nahalat Shalom in Albuquerque has been an active participant in the current revival of klezmer music and dance. They have their own intergenerational band consisting of 20 members who will, of course, be featured during Klezmerquerque.

The All-Star Klezmer Trio:

Joel Rubin - clarinetist and ethnomusicologist, long considered by many to be the leading performer of Jewish instrumental klezmer music in the world today.

Steve Greenman - violinist, recognized internationally as one of the finest practitioners, composers and teachers of traditional East European Jewish klezmer violin music.

Pete Rushefsky -plays the tsimbl (also known as the cimbalom - a concert hammered dulcimer), Executive Director of New York City's Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Come listen, come dance.  To life, to life, l'chaim!
