Item Description
This lot is an original Audubon print (Rathbone's Wood-Warbler) from the first octavo edition of The Birds of America. After John James Audubon, this print is a hand-colored stone lithograph by James T. Bowen, an English printer who settled in Philadelphia and was well-known for his fine lithography. It dates to 1840-1844. The print is a smaller version of the large folio that was part of the original version of Audubon's Birds. Following publication of the folio edition, Audubon returned to America and turned his attention to producing a smaller version of his work -- the octavo edition -- in hopes of expanding the audience for the work. The first octavo edition plates were produced by Bowen under Audubon's direct supervision. The first octavo edition was the first American edition of Audubon's great work.
In overall excellent condition, the print measures 10 inches x 6-1/2 inches. It has some small dark marks along the top edge of the page (possibly watercolor or water stain), and remains of tissue and glue along the binding edge (including holes and small losses). The bird depicted is now known as the Yellow Warbler. The print comes in an archival sleeve and includes a Certificate of Authenticity plus a copy of Audubon's original text describing the bird. This antique print should be framed using preservation framing techniques.
