Item Description
The reason this set is so highly prized is that it was the last one printed before World War I broke out. The war dispersed the group and they never again continued their work. It is considered by experts in the field to be the best quality edition ever published. T Some articles were written by the best-known scholars of the day such as Edmund Gosse, .JB Bury, Algernon Charles Swinburne, John Muir, Peter Kropotkin, TH. Huxley, William Michael Rossetti. Among the then lesser-known contributors were some who would later become distinguished, such as Ernest Rutherford, Bertrand Russell. Robert Collison "Their History Throughout The Ages (1966), wrote of the 11 edition that it 'was probably the finest edition of the Britannica ever issued & it ranks with the Italiana and the Espasa as one of the three greatest encyclopaedias in the world. It was the last edition to be produced almost in its entirety in Britain & its position in time as a summary of the world's knowledge just before the outbreak of World War I is particularly valuable. The 11 edition's articles are still of value and interest to modern readers scholars, especially as a cultural artifact: the British Empire was at its very height, imperialism was largely unchallenged, much of the world was still ruled by monarchs & horrors of the modern world wars were still in the future. They are an invaluable resource for topics dropped from modern encyclopedias, particularly in biography and the history of science & technology. As a literary text, the encyclopedia holds value as a voice of early 20th-century prose, it employs literary devices, such as the pathetic fallacy, which are not as common in modern texts.
