Item Description
This fully functional, attractive rowboat has a strong Nordic heritage, which many Oles can appreciate! The boats are built without molds, or "by eye," and the youth apprentices learn to trust themselves through the process of building these from scratch. Over ninety percent of our apprentices are recruited and hired from Boys Totem Town (Ramsey County Juvenile Corrections). In Urban Boatbuilders' experiential, hands-on learning environment, youth participants from partner agencies gain skills, knowledge, confidence, and responsibility while learning wood working and boat building skills in a mentored environment. The Norwegian Pram is an eye-catching piece of true Scandinavian heritage but you don't have to be Scandinavian, or eye-catching, to enjoy this boat! For centuries, prams have been used for errands and light fishing on the south coast of Norway and the fjords around Oslo. They are built by eye around a bottom plank that is bent into shape by shoring it from the ceiling. This versatile boat rows beautifully, could be rigged for sail, or could be efficiently powered by an electric trolling motor. It also makes a wonderful tow-behind for larger boats. Easy-to-maintain oil finish brings out the beauty of the wood.
