Item Description
Carved by N. Selestewa, Hopi Pueblo, Hoteville, Third Mesa, Northeastern Arizona.
Circa 1980's; height 11 1/2".
Hand carved and painted cottonwood root with feathers and fabrics.
Item Special Note
The uncles carved these dolls to give to the young girls of the pueblo to teach them about Hopi mythology. All indications in his costume point to inspiration from a Plains-type warrior, particularly the feather headdress. They can be seen in the mixed kachina dances and the plaza dances.
