Item Description
This lovely, well-aged Bordeaux appeals to both the thinker and the romantic in all of us. Calon-Segur, a Third Growth estate, is the most northern of the classified estates in the Medoc region and is in the Saint-Estephe appellation. This 1996 vintage is a solid favorite of a critics and wine lovers alike. For the thinker, here are some numbers. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, the 96 was made from extremely low yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare. Parker rates this wine as a 92 and in his most recent tasting, already over 10 years old, says it is it is an exceptional wine. Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. This classic, medium to full-bodied, traditionally made wine improves dramatically with airing, suggesting it will have a very long life. And other critics agree with the International Wine Cellar rating it a 93, noting its pure, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, minerals, tobacco, leather and fresh herbs. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. From more recent tastings, a cellartracker.com member raved recently that it still very fresh at 15 years old and many years left to go. All the hallmarks of a lovely St Estephe with rich red fruits, cedar and firm but ripe and well integrated tannins. But now for the heart you will find one on the Calon-Segur label. Some tell that it relates to the fact that the Marguis de Segur, who also owned Latour and Lafite, said once that I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon. Others say that he lost all three estates in a card game and the lucky winners placed the heart on the label in deference to the Marquis heartbroken wife. Which is true? Who knows, but either is a fun conversation starter when you open this bottle at your next dinner party.
