Item Description

The Ribera del Duero region of Spain, southwest of Rioja, is known for its sturdy reds, made mostly from Tempranillo grapes. Similar to Rioja reds, Ribera del Duero reds are more structured, built for medium- and long-term aging. And this bottle is an example of a great Ribera, using only native yeasts and estate-grown fruit, hand-picked into small cases. Robert Parker gives this 05 Felix Callejo Family Reserve a rating of 93, describing a glass-staining opaque purple, it sports a bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, cinnamon, violets, and blackberry. Layered on the palate, it has tons of succulent black fruit, licorice, and ripe tannin. This lengthy wine will unfold in the bottle for another 5-7 years. Wine Spectator was similarly impressed, also giving it a 93 rating, saying the solid structure is chiseled from granite, but carries elegant, even delicate flavors of lilac, strawberry, cinnamon and bitter chocolate. The tannins grip, then dissolve, while the acidity keeps this red lively and fresh. Drink now through 2015. However, Wine Spectator also say there were only 50 cases imported so if you like Spanish reds, grab this one while you can.
