Item Description
Robert Parker referred to Carlisle wine maker Mike Officer, along with Larry Turley and Turleys winemaker Ehrin Jordan as the reference point..for world class, quintessential old vine Zinfandels. In a 2011 WS article on Californias old vine zinfandels, Tim Fish wrote the best old vineyards are like classic movie stars. Did anyone really think Humphrey Bogart handsome? Rather, he had that hard-to-define something...old vines: "They add nuances, some interesting complexities that the young fruit-delicious as it is-just doesn't have." The Montafi Ranch vineyard was planted in 1926 and its Zin is uniquely expressive of its origin. Mike Officer says Montafi has been on a roll lately with the 2007, 2008, and 2009 all besting previous vintages but warns there isnt much yield at all expected from the lean vintage of 2010. Here are two bottles of the sold old everywhere, Parker 95, WS 91 point 2009 Montafi Ranch. WS tasting notes describe deeply structured and still showing its youth, with boysenberry and fresh sage aromas leading to concentrated flavors of tart blueberry, anise and cracked pepper. Finishes with firm tannins. Parker wrote the dense purple-hued 2009 Zinfandel Montafi Ranch (a vineyard planted in 1926) is phenomenal. Dark, jammy black raspberry notes intermixed with sweet black cherries, blackberries, licorice, charcoal and underbrush are present in this complex, full-bodied, massive yet impressively well-balanced offering. It will drink exceptionally well for 7-8 years. With only 527 cases made, dont expect more of this anytime soon.
