Item Description
Williams Selyem made its first Pinot in 1981 and is still arguably one of the finest artisans of pinot Noir in California. Parker wrote This winery receives considerable praise (justifiably so) for their stylish, immensely flavorful and complex Cotes de Beaune-styled Pinot Noirs...one of only a handful of American wineries to capture the elusive Pinot Noir perfume without stripping the wine with multiple manipulations and clarifications. He also said with thirteen separate Pinot Noirs, Williams-Selyem has something for just about everybody. Just for you, here is a pair of their Russian River Valley Pinots from the Winerys Williams Selyem Estate vineyard and the Bucher Vineyard, both rated 93+ and from the fabulous 2009 vintage. Wine Spectator questioned 2009 as possibly the best vintage yet for California Pinot Noir and in a December 2011 article noted that especially noteworthy are nine excellent Pinot Noirs from Williams Selyem with the Estate Vineyard Pinot topping them at a rating of 94 points. Their review of the Estate records beautifully crafted, intense and vibrant, displaying zesty wild berry, raspberry and red and black licorice notes. Full-bodied and focused, gaining depth and richness. The Bucher vineyard is slightly north and at a higher elevation than the Estate vineyard. Tasting notes for the wine from this younger Williams Selyem vineyard note newer clonal plantings are now driving the aromas of ripe black cherries, honeysuckle blossom, sassafras and mineral. Those aromas then translate to concentrated flavors of maraschino cherries, strawberry/rhubarb pie, root beer, fresh spices and forest floor. This extremely feminine and complex wine is complemented by sweet, toasty oak tannin and vibrant acidity in the finish. These bottles will just get better with age and are something to hold on to before celebrating their comparison when you open them in 2020 or so - but if you cant wait, theyll still knock your socks off now.
