Rank 1, 2001 Wine Spectator Top 100. That says a lot about the Kosta Browne 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, but what may say more is that the Sonoma Coast from 2008 garnered 90 points and the 2007 was ranked #4 on the Top 100 list of 2009. Since 2002, the winery's third vintage with Pinot Noir, KB has produced 69 Pinots, with this rather striking statistic: All but one have earned 90 points or higher, and 24 have earned ratings of 95 points or higher. No other California Pinot producer comes close to matching those figures. At a modest release price, you would think most wine lovers might go ahead an invest in this wine, but that is true only after you wade through the waiting list for distribution of over 15,000 other enthusiasts already in line. The only way to get these wines is through that coveted list or at a huge premium at auction, and even that opportunity is scarce. To find a collection including both the #1 and #4 Sonoma Coast, would be next to impossible anyplace but here. Enjoy this vertical tasting of the Sonoma Coast Kosta Browne with one each of the 2007, 2008, and 2009. Tastings of the 95 point 2009 relate ripe and deeply flavored, concentrated and well-structured, this full-bodied red offers a complex mix of black cherry, wild berry and raspberry fruit that's pure and persistent, ending with a pebbly note and firm tannins (5,818 cases made). Tastings of the 2008 recall intense, with charry, toasty, cedary oak notes that fold into ripe plum and wild berry fruit. Full-bodied, spicy and delicate, yet ending with firm tannins and a minerally note (3,554 cases made). The 94 point 2007 was described as firm and focused, with a wonderful purity of flavor, offering a complex, focused mix of black cherry, raspberry, spice and anise. Full-bodied and concentrated.
