Item Description
Kosta Browne began as a dream shared by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. In the summer of 1997, while working at a restaurant in Santa Rosa, Dan and Michael saved tip money forabout eight monthsand eventually had enough to buy a half ton of Pinot Noir, a used barrel and an old hand-crank stemmer-crusher, a purchase that marks the beginning of Kosta Browne. Since 2002, the winery's third vintage with Pinot Noir, KB has produced 69 Pinots, with this rather striking statistic: All but one have earned 90 points or higher, and 24 have earned ratings of 95 points or higher. No other California Pinot producer comes close to matching those figures. Again, Kosta Browne made Wine Spectators Top 10 in 2001, this time hitting #1 with its 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Here is a fabulous horizontal tasting of three 2009 Kosta Browne Pinots, the Sonoma Coast, Russian River, and Garys Vineyard, offering the opportunity to compare the effect of terroir from this exceptional label. The #1 ranked Sonoma coast was rated 95 points by Wine Spectator and described as ripe and deeply flavored, concentrated and well-structured, this full-bodied red offers a complex mix of black cherry, wild berry and raspberry fruit that's pure and persistent, ending with a pebbly note and firm tannins. The Russian River Valley scored 91 points with tasting notes telling fresh, bright, ripe black cherry, raspberry and light floral scents lead off in this supple, fleshy, full-bodied red, which is complex and layered on the palate, maintaining its core fruitiness and gaining subtle touches of dark berry and spice" (4,320 cases made). The Garys Vineyard garnered 93 points with tasting notes noting supple and immediately pleasing, with tasty plum, wild berry and floral scents. Smooth-textured and full-bodied, gaining structure and depth and unfolding in a graceful, supple manner. Note that a scant 439 cases were made of this wine so youd better get your taste here.
