Item Description

Two great label Brunellos from the overlooked 1998 and the stellar 1997 vintage. Sangiovese is Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wines that are a trademark of the region. The Banfi Poggio allOro was first produced in 1985. It is a reserve 100% Sangiovese wine, estate-bottled in limited quantities only in exceptional years from the Banfi Poggio all'Oro vineyard. Aged for a total of five years, including a minimum of two years in French oak barriques, this wine emerges with exceptional depth, character and aging potential and is a superb accompaniment to red meats, game and aged cheeses. Wine Spectator wrote ""Banfi, truly one of the leaders of the region, takes its unusually fine Brunello to another level, with this huge single vineyard wine." This 1998 shows remarkable elegance and complexity, and a beautiful bouquet of marasca cherries, tobacco and mint, with a lovely, long finish. The 1997 Caparzo gives you a chance to taste from 1997, the vintage Piero Antinori called the vintage of the century for Brunellos. Noted as "dark ruby, with some red edge to it. Very ripe fruit on the nose, with a jammy raspberry and cherry character. Full bodied, with polished tannins and a long finish". Two Italian gems at their peaks!
