Chateau Ste Michelle prides itself on being Washington states Founding Winery, with some of the oldest and most acclaimed vineyards in the Columbia Valley. In its December 2011 issue, Wine Spectator wrote of Bargain Reds and Distinctive Whites noting that Washington continues to be a source of value for other red varieties as well. If you're a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a good hunting ground. They reviewed the Columbia Valley Cabernet as on the lighter side, showing nicely ripe cherry and spice flavors, as well as hints of tobacco on the soft finish rating it an 86. Wine.com noted that this was #3 wine on their list of top 100 sellers of 2011, supporting the winemakers description of this as an inviting Cab with plenty of complexity and structure with silky tannins...very versatile with food-try it with beef, pork or pasta. Critics' tasting notes cite Spice -- a hint of tobacco, a hint of milk chocolate -- gives way to a ripe set of fruit flavors in this big shouldered, thoroughly seductive red. This texture is driven by fine, peppery tannins, which stem the tide of ripe, plummy fruit, giving the wine a touch of elegance even as it remains irresistible. Irresistible indeed!
