Item Description
Axios is owned by Constantine "Gus" Kalaris, a fine-wine distributor based in Maryland who traces his love for wine back to when he was a teenager and used to sneak tastes of wines. He got the "bug" to make his own wine from hanging out with California winemakers and winery owners in his job as a distributor and importer. Axios means "worthy" in Greek. It's a nod to Kalaris' Greek heritage, and to his father, who is a Greek Orthodox priest. When someone becomes a priest in the Greek Orthodox Church, the congregation shouts, "Axios!. The winemaker is Bob Egelhof whose resume included stints with Merryvale, Chappellet, Pahlmeyer, David Arthur, Beckstoffer, Harlan and Amizetta in addition to Axios. He makes the Axios of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 2 years in 70% new French Oak then in the bottle for an additional year, with a mere 750 cases of Axios produced annually. Parker gave the 2004 93 points noting a very strong effort for this vintage, opulent, deep plum/garnet/ruby, with loads of chocolate, black currant, cedar wood and spice box notes. With sweet, supple tannins, a dense, full body, a voluptuous mouthfeel, and outstanding purity and length, this is a delicious, substantial, yet lush style of wine to drink over the next 10-15+ years.
