Item Description

The origins of the chteau can be traced back to Medieval times. When Bertrand de Goth was ordained Pope Clement V, he adorned friends and family with cardinalships, including his nephew Raymond Guilhem, destined to become Cardinal Raymond Guilhem de Fargues, who built himself a fortress in 1306. In 1586 the family name was appended by "Saluces" and Chteau de Fargues has been the property of the Lur-Saluces family ever since. The Lur-Saluces family then took over Chteau d'Yquem in 1785 and "Lur-Saluces" became synonymous with sweet wine production. dYquem remains the mother of all Sauternes but after Chteau d'Yquem was relinquished, de Fargues became the remaining vestige of the Lur-Saluces winemaking family. Comparing Fargues to its acclaimed cousin, Neal Martin wrote Yquem has more complexity, perhaps due to its more heterogeneous soil profiles and higher elevation. But Chteau de Fargues is the "dark horse" of Sauternes: a gorgeous, sexy wine - and the 1945 was sublime and unbelievably fresh and vigorous (the "another 50 year" suggestion is not an exaggeration.) Obviously a wine that begs to be laid down for awhile if the 1945 is still maturing and sought after. Of this 2005 vintage Parker wrote the 2005 vintage has turned out to be excellent, if not outstanding. It is the finest year for these sweet wines after 2001 and before 2007. He gave this wine a stellar 94 points and described Rich, honeyed citrus along with creme brle, vanillin, sweet caramelized pineapple and citrus notes are followed by a wine with an unctuously thick, viscous, full-bodied mouthfeel, but with good enough acidity to balance out the wines enormous weight, richness, and concentration. This should be a 30+ year wine. Quite a keeper.
