Item Description
Encaustic painting involves painting with a mixture of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. This mixture is applied molten to a rigid surface and then fused (or re-melted) to create a variety of effects.

Encaustic painting methods were invented by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians and used in portrait paintings and frescos The Greek word enkaustikos means "to burn." It was almost a lost art form until recently. Early 20th century ventures into encaustic included, most famously, Jasper Johns. Diego Rivera returned to it constantly throughout his career. Encaustic painting is recently enjoying a resurgence and popularity among artists and patrons alike.

Linda Benenati studied art at San Jose State in the late 60's, but ended up with a degree in English. Consequently, she loves the interplay of letters, words and images. Her work is currently being displayed at Wisteria in Soquel, California. Several of her pieces have been selected for inclusion in the Pajaro Valley Art Council's juried exhibit Wax: Contemporary Encaustic Works. The exhibit runs March 1 to April 15, 2012.
