Encaustic painting methods were invented by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians and used in portrait paintings and frescos The Greek word enkaustikos means "to burn." It was almost a lost art form until recently. Early 20th century ventures into encaustic included, most famously, Jasper Johns. Diego Rivera returned to it constantly throughout his career.
