Item Description

Dan was inspired to capture the spirit of what he sees, As you travel through his work you will see the common thread of a lifetime of painting and exploring subject matter and what has made him one of the Florida Keys favorite artists.

Dan has been a resident of the Florida Keys for over 50 years. Having moved here from Chicago where he received his formal training at the Chicago Art Institute. While there he received several scholarships and continued his education, taking various classes and workshops.

In 1957 Dan visited the Keys and found himself  in a world surrounded by beautiful blue gulfstream waters, the backcountry of Florida Bay rich with tropical plants, birds, fish and magnificent sunsets. He felt compelled to paint what he saw and share that beauty with others.

Dan went back to his Job as an ironworker in Chicago knowing he had to return to the Keys.

In 1961 he did come back. He became an avid weekend painter, painting on driftwood planks and as interest grew he started selling his artwork to restaurants and gift shops. He also bought, refurbished and sold yachts. Earned his 100 ton master license from the US Coast Guard as well as designing and building homes and a Spanish galleon restaurant in Islamorada. As Dan's artwork expanded he did illustration work for a history column in the Key West Citizen newspaper. In 1987 he was commissioned by the Tourist Development Association to do a large (8' x 20')  piece depicting "Key West and the Florida Keys" for the State Fair.

His work often depicts historical scenes like wreckers, smugglers and seascapes and local characters. He has painted in France, The Bahamas, The Caribbean, South America, England, Italy and even the Soviet Union.

Dan has received numerous awards and ribbons and recently won a grant for four murals that now hang in the Freeman Justice Center in Key West.

As a multitalented artist he doesn't hesitate to reach. "It's the search....the spiritual thing that I want others to feel and see in my work. When You've seen my work you will know me."
