Artist Statement:
Art has always been a part of Gail's life; sometimes dormant, sometimes active, but never disappearing. Her subject matter is most often portraits, followed by horses, with nature showing up from time to time. Her portraits have been represented by Portraits Inc in NY, and Portraits North in Boston, and can be seen in the Circuit Court Building in Washington, D.C, Dartmouth College, business offices, and private homes. She received her BA in fine art fromEmmanuelCollege, did some graduate work at theBostonMuseumSchool, and then toured the major museums ofEurope. While a great admirer of the classical masters, Gail is now exploring means of broader artistic expression, while still remaining within the realm of realism.
“I believe great art must be a kind of force of nature, that it must “breathe”, not with lifelike qualites necessarily, but rather with life itself.”
Gail has won numerous awards, including first prize a Boston City Hall, which resulted in her work being published in Yankee Magazine. In the words of Mrs Otten regarding a portrait commissioned of her late husband, she wrote: “It would be difficult for me to tell you exactly how I felt when I looked at Albert’s portrait. It was as if you brought him alive in such a total way that one seldom experiences this kind of emotion. Every friend and member of the family who have looked at it have commented on how you captured Albert’s total personality.”
