Item Special Note
Bobby Valentine is a man who knows baseball, so it came as no surprise, perhaps, when the storied Boston Red Sox tapped him as their 45th manager in December 2011.
Drafted number five overall out of USC by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1968 Major League Baseball draft, Valentine went on to play for the California Angels, the San Diego Padres, and the New York Mets.
When his playing days ended, Valentine distinguished himself as a manager, leading the New York Mets to a 97–66 record and a wild card playoff berth in 1999. Wildly popular with fans in Japan, Valentine managed the Japanese Pacific League’s Chiba Lotte Marines.
The baseball guru eventually turned his sights to sports journalism, making his broadcast debut as a baseball analyst for ESPN during the 2009 American and National League Championship Series and World Series.
Bobby Valentine’s humanitarian work is perhaps less well known. For his efforts in New York City following the 9/11 tragedy, he was awarded the Branch Ricky Award from the MLB and the key to city by former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. He has received many honors for his other charitable works
The Boston Red Sox’s newest skipper will be wearing number 25 in Boston, a tribute to Sox great Tony Conigliaro.
Valentine will be joined on stage by noted sportswriter and baseball journalist Peter Gammons. Gammons is a three-time recipient of the National Sportswriter of the Year Award, voted annually by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
