Item Description
A richly textured patterned quilt, assembled mostly in patches of oceanic blue and brown, greens and donated patterned fabrics, the Leaping Lizards circular Snail Quilt takes the form of a concentric spiral. This adorable snail, born out of the class’ current project on the species, embodies continuity and the strength and resiliency of natural systems.
Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty comes to mind, a large earthwork project on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Spiral Jetty immortalized this coil form, conveying both a sense of playfulness and gravity. As an appropriate symbol for Ms. Alicia’s preschool class, this sense of hopeful progression lends warmth to a quilt that has been so lovingly woven with gold designs and appliqués by each child. An old maxim asserts that at the center of such spiral shapes there lies a treasure. May such treasure be discovered by this quilt’s lucky new owner.
