Joey
WAR HORSE
2011
Our Joey bear was designed with working drawings the Handspring Puppet Theatre used for the Broadway production of War Horse. Using the best technology of the 17th century, our Joey bear is constructed of tubular brass, cane, reed and rattan in the same fashion as the original full-size puppet. Pieces of the Broadway puppet’s mane, tail and hooves also were used in the creation of our Joey bear. He is sculpted in his first position as an adult horse, the point of the show when the audience first sees the magnificent full-sized puppet. No portrayal of Joey would be complete without his operators and our Joey puppet is seen with his “Head, Hind and Heart.” Each operator wears a rust-colored Wallace “Beary” shirt, blending into the color of Joey’s construction. They also wear assorted earthtone wool pants with leather braces and leather paddock boots with tan gaiters. The head operator also wears a wool newsboy cap. A horse this special is certainly worth searching through the battlefields of World War I to find.
