Item Description

1 week of Spanish Arts Summer Camp/"Aventuas de Verano"

  • Children participate in fun activities that encourage Spanish language development and explore the cultures and customs of Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Camp is taught in bilingual format with approximately 75% of the class in Spanish
  • Children do well at various levels of language skill and do not need to know Spanish to enroll
Children participate in fun and engaging activities that encourage Spanish language development through visual arts, music, movement, storytelling, and games in an immersive environment. Children explore the cultures and customs of Spanish-speaking countries through weekly "travels" through every region of Latin America.

Each day begins with an original art activity, inspired by the week's region. Projects range from Mexican luchador masks, pop-up cards about Argentinean Tango, Colombian molas, and eco-friendly Caribbean maracas made out of recycled materials. Through these projects, children not only develop an appreciation of arts and culture, but are exposed to a wide array of Spanish vocabulary about size, shape, color and more.
The second half of each class focuses on a mixture of music, geography, movement, storytelling, and games. Reinforcing Spanish vocabulary and Latin culture, the teacher leads students in exciting and effective activities ranging from the traditional, like El Coquí from Puerto Rico, to the original, such as El Taller's own El Tren de Nueva York board game.

On Friday of each week, families are invited for a class presentation of students' artwork and a mini-concert in El Taller's Grady Alexis Gallery and Parra-Guthrie Auditorium. Children share the works of art they've created, the songs they've practiced, and everything they've learned throughout the week. By taking children on a journey throughout Latin America, "Aventuras de Verano" enhances the conversational ability and fosters Spanish bilingualism with a better understanding of the diverse world we live in.
