Portland-based Akihiko Miyoshi explores the intersection between art, aesthetics and technology, most frequently dealing with issues surrounding photographic representation.
In Abstract Photograph, the image is constructed with mirror, paper, and red, green and blue tape (the three primary colors of a pixel) and taken with a large format camera. Writing about this work, Miyoshi states that "while the images allude to abstraction...the photographic nature of the images are emphasized as the image plane is selectively focused and blurred through the use of the depth of field."
The resulting large-scale image is "poetic, mysterious and playful," commented Julie Saul, the owner/director of Julie Saul Gallery in New York. Saul was the juror for the Silver Eye's 2012 Fellowship competition and she selected Miyoshi as the International Award Winner from submissions by 259 American and international artists.
A solo exhibition of thirteen works from the Abstract Photograph project will open at Silver Eye in mid-May 2012.
