Item Description

Thomas Holdorf 16"x20" original black+white photograph, a hand-manipulated collage (in the days before digital), vintage silver gelatin @ 1980. Only seven signed works exist; all others bear the mark "Studio Holdorf."

  • Prior to embarking on his own as a leading contemporary photographer, Tom was studio director for Bert Stern, Rico Puhlmann and assistant to Steven Meisel. He trained under the watchful eyes of Horst and Richard Avedon. He was a favorite of models from Givenchy to Randolph Duke, being the only photographer allowed backstage in Paris, London and New York, shooting candid shots of "the girls" as they transformed during hair and make-up into luxuripus Swans floating down the runway.

  • Just as his imprimatur was gaining recognition and acceptance beyond the arbiters of fashion, beauty and collage, Tom joined the chorus of Angels, taken in 1994 at the age of 35 by AIDs.

  • Christie's New York and London, featuring Tom's work in a two-page center layout, described his work as "representing the best of the Anerican ideal of men and women, strength, courage and beauty." Samuel Sachs,III, former director of The Frick, who established the Photography Collection at The Detroit Institute of Art, found Tom's work "bewitching for a young man prior to his prime."

  • The body of work is limited to 200 originals, none of which will be reproduced.
