Item Description
The third graders are spending the year exploring West Africa, a region rich in history, musical and artistic heritage, and collective wisdom. Wisdom is shared down through generations via intricate storytelling as well as through memorable proverbs like "By crawling, a child learns to stand," "Silence is also speech," and "When the music changes, so does the dance." The children also explored proverbs from their own family cultures as a means of understanding the wisdom exchanged in this way across time. To commemorate this part of their third-grade experiences, the classes have each created paper proverb quilts for which each child has decorated a square with a favorite proverb and a watercolor that illustrates their impressions of that proverb. These framed quilts would look lovely on a home or office wall and serve as a reminder of our children's verbal and artistic passions, Nueva's magically creative environment, and the wisdom that can only be brought to us over time. Special thanks to Ariel Berman, Julie Bornstein, Aliya Gordon, Kirsten Gray, Grace Kahng, Sondra Livingston-Carr, Cheri Myers, Neha Pall, Maya Sissoko, Chris Warden, and Gabe Wilson.
