Item Description

Established in 1964 to replace the Prince Shoal Lightship, Haut-Fond Prince Light guides mariners through one of the most dangerous shoals in the Saint Lawrence River, near Tadoussac, Quebec, at the mouth of the Saguenay River. In 1968, the 83-foot tall tower with red and white horizontal stripes was built on top of the circular keepers' dwelling on a caisson-style base. The light produces a white flash every 2.5 seconds with a range of 18 nautical miles. In 2002, the Canadian Coast Guard contracted repairs to the architectural and structural components of the upper pillar as well as the concrete slab used as a helicopter pad. In addition, repairs to the cylindrical outside wall, the guardrail and installation of anchoring were completed.
