Item Description
Built at a cost of $10,330, Sankaty Head Light was set on a 90-foot bluff on the southeastern shore of Nantucket Island. The 60-foot brick and granite tower was fitted with New England’s first Fresnel lens, a second-order lens with a focal plane height of 158 feet. The tower was painted with a red stripe to serve as a daymark.
In 1990, the Army Corps of Engineers estimated that in 10 years, the Sankaty head Light would be in danger of falling into the sea as a result of the eroding bluff. In 2006, the ‘Sconset Trust contracted with International Chimney of Buffalo, NY, to move the tower for an estimated $4.0 million. On November 24, 2007, the light was relit at its new location, 280 feet from the original site.
This Harbour Lights replica commemorates the historic move. It lights up, too! It comes with an adapter or can be lit by 3 AA batteries.
