WMS is proud to announce its plans for the construction of an Outdoor Science Lab:
This is your opportunity to make a direct donation to the Science Program at WMS. Select your giving level and know that we appreciate your support.
The importance of learning in, as well as about the natural world has been recognized not only in Montessori classrooms, but also by researchers and educators worldwide. It is our habit to use our immediate surroundings as a microcosm of the larger environment. An outdoor classroom encourages increased time spent outside and offers a variety of functions: a science lab, a quiet space for reflection and writing, a home base for field studies and projects on the land. Our plan is to have all of our students from age 5 to 15 experience outdoor learning in this lab setting.
Access to an outside environment where specimens can be collected or observed in conjunction with classroom materials and study truly brings the Montessori curriculum alive. Time spent in the natural world as a basis for artwork and the writing of research, fiction and poetry is an integral component of the curriculum. Children want to know what part they play in the world around them, and nature is the most germane element in leading them to a sense of connectedness to and responsibility for all life.
