Arthur Rothstein was one of the most prolific and influential photographers of the 20th century. His most famous photograph, Fleeing a Dust Storm, Cimarron County, Oklahoma, 1936, is a defining image in American photography and history.
Arthur Rothstein was the first photographer sent out by the Photo Unit of the Historical Section of the Resettlement Administration (which became the Farm Security Administration in 1937). Other notable FSA photographer included Esther Bubley, Marjory Collins, Mary Post Wolcott, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks and Ben Shahn.
The FSA employed Rothstein and the others to publicize the living conditions of the rural poor in the United States. This image may have been made on one of Rothstein's many trips documenting the plight of displaced farmers, possibly in the South.
