Carrie Schneider’s latest photographic series and video, Burning House (2010-2012), is currently on view in a solo show at Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago.
“Over the course of several months,” Schneider writes, “I built a series of identical wooden houses, placed them on an island in the middle of a lake (that my grandfather helped to dig during the Depression) and burnt them down… Here, the house has survived blizzards and torrential rains but it remains standing, as if being unrelentingly ablaze is a state of normalcy.”
