About the 2007 Estate Obsidian -
Deep crimson hues reflecting its full, rich body, this elegant wine gets your attention immediately. The opening aromatics of earthy spices and dried floral notes give way to black cherry and mocha. As it opens, the aromatics continue to develop and perfumed floral notes become more dominant. An initial tease of pomegranate and cranberry move through to expansive mid-palate flavors of toasted macadamia nuts, dry tobacco, vanilla bean, ripe blackberries, dark stone fruits and a hint of eucalyptus. The finish is unexpectedly smooth and long for the big, bold structure of this wine. Supple, finely grained tannins with well-integrated acidity and fruit balance make this wine approachable now; yet promise a long, rewarding, cellar life.
Tour and Tasting with Winemaker --
Arkenstone named Sam Kaplan Winemaker in 2006. After his first harvest at Pine Ridge Winery and seven vintages at ZD Wines, Sam arrived at Arkenstone with a depth and range of experience that encompass the many facets of vineyard management, cellarmaster expertise, and winemaking. His coursework in viticulture and enology at U. C. Davis, as well as his fluency in Spanish, anchor this hands-on experience in both the vineyard and the winery.
Sam oversees the many seasonal and daily activities at Arkenstone. He is winemaker, vineyard manager and collaborated extensively on the winery project. In his role as winemaker and overseer of the vineyards, Sam maintains the integrity and quality of Arkenstone wine. The depth, complexity, and balance of Arkenstone wines evidence the tremendous breadth of his abilities.
Our 2006 vintage inaugural release in 2009, was the first vintage Sam took from vineyard to bottle at Arkenstone. His experience, skills, and extraordinary palate, blended with a steady demeanor and wicked sense of humor make him a perfect fit for Arkenstone.
