Item Description

Rick Longoria seeks to produce wines that exhibit a purity of fruit and distinctive vineyard expression.  His style can be briefly described as “balanced, elegant, rich, silky wines, true to varietal and vineyard source that will age well.”  Longoria wines are often closer in style to European wines than the typical California wines

This box set of Longoria Wines includes Pinot Noir from 2004-2009.

2004

The wine has the characteristic briary cedar, cherry aromas with a hint of sage in the background. Because of the structure and acidity of the wine, the wine will benefit from decanting or breathing time in the glass to fully allow the aromas to develop. On the palate the wine is dense, with some of the flavors being overridden with some firm tannins. The oak is nicely integrated with the flavors of the wine. The wine at this early point of its development only hints at the depth of flavor and complexity that it will achieve with four to seven more years of bottle aging.

2005

This 2005 vintage of Fe Ciega Pinot Noir has complex aromas of Asian spices, sandalwood, sage, plums and black walnuts. On the palate the wine is medium bodied, and initially seems subdued and restrained. However, as the wine breathes in the glass it begins to open up and with each sip the wine expands a little more in the mouth to reveal the complex flavors and layers that has become the hallmark of Fe Ciega Pinot Noir. The wine is beautifully balanced in terms of oak integration, acidity and silky tannins.  Enjoy this wine with salmon, duck, and Holiday turkey.

2006

The wine has an unusually dark color for Pinot Noir, giving us an early clue to its intensity. The aromas are of sweet dark cherries with a hint of Fe Ciega’s characteristic coastal sage in the background. On the palate the wine is immediately rich, thick with texture and flavor. The tannins are smooth and velvety, and the oak flavors are perfectly integrated into the wine. Despite being as rich as it is, the wine is still relatively closed in because of its youth. Decanting this wine or opening it an hour before serving will allow it to breathe and open up.

2007

The wine has a medium dark ruby color. The aromas are a mixture of intense exotic spices and dried berries. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with strong spices accenting dried cherry flavors. Balanced oak vanillin contributes a slightly sweet impression in the mid-palate and finish. The tannins are slightly dry but will smooth out with 2-3 years of additional cellaring. The final result is an intensely flavored wine that manages to still remain elegant and balanced.

2008

The wine has a medium ruby color with aromas that are a complex mixture of cherries, dried herbs, thyme and sage. On the palate it is medium bodied with a soft, rich, viscous texture. The flavors are of cherries accented with dried herbs. The acidity is well balanced and the finish has a sweet slightly candied quality to it. Although this vintage of Fe Ciega is more approachable than many of our previousvintages, it would still benefit from being opened 30-60 minutes prior to serving,or being decanted.

2009

The wine has a medium-dark ruby color with hints of purple on the edges. The aromas are a complex mixture of herbs, sage, tobacco, redwood and cedar with hints of cherries in the background. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with flavors of black cherries and the earthy elements found in the aroma. The aromas and flavors of our Pinot Noir from Fe Ciega Vineyard are characteristically far more earthy than fruity in nature. Because of the youth, the flavors are somewhat restrained by the moderately extracted and silky tannins. As the wine ages in the bottle, the tannins will soften allowing the flavors to come through. The acidity is well balanced and the oak integration is seamless with the fruit of the wine. This wine will benefit from aeration, therefore decanting or opening 30-60 minutes prior to serving is recommended.
