"The power of Althouse’s images begins with his discovery of old objects that, for him, seem to embody some special sense of memory or mystery," writes Dr. Eugene Metcalfe in the catalogue accompanying Althouse's internationally touring exhibition in 2009.
"In Rake I, for example, Althouse’s image of a sheet tied to the tines of an old wooden rake is presented in minute detail with dramatically contrasting light and shadow... the two mundane objects become emblems of crucifixion and assume mythical and sacred meanings that compound their secular antecedents."
