Charles “Teenie” Harris is the subject of a much-acclaimed retrospective that premiered at the Carnegie Museum of Art in October 2011 and will tour nationally.
He was a staff photographer from 1936 through 1975 for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation’s most influential black newspapers. Harris documented nearly all of the notable events in the city as well as a wide range of activities in the daily lives of African Americans.
The Hill District (the birthplace of Teenie and playwright August Wilson) was on the national jazz circuit and alive with clubs and ballrooms when Harris took this photograph. It shows the Pittsburgh-born musician Billy Eckstine and the members of his band at the time — including future superstars of jazz, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Art Blakey and Sarah Vaughan at the mic.
For other Teenie Harris photographs in the Auction, see items 50, 63, and 65.
