Berenice Abbott is an important figure in 20th century photography. She is best known for her portraits and for the WPA project Changing New York, an epic look at the city  in the 1930s. However, Abbott's largest body of work devoted to a single subject are the evocative photographs she made on a trip along Route 1 during the summer of 1954.

Abbott and two companions left from New York City and drove south to Key West, Florida. There, they turned around retracing their route until they reached the last northerly point; Fort Kent, Maine. This untitled image was possibly taken in the South during this trip.

Abbott devoted the next two years developing the 2,400 negatives from the trip and writing a prospectus on the historical importance of the project. In her writing, Abbott revealed what motivated her to take the trip. "We wanted to capture visually the character of an historic section of the United States, its beauties and incongruities and all. If visible evidences of the past survived, we wanted to photograph them before bulldozers and derricks moved in."
