In Two Volumes. First London Edition. London: G. G. J. & J. Robinson, 1793. First London edition (undated see Ford). In two volumes, complete. Pages trimmed. Original quarter leather over pebble marble boards. Engraved title with portrait of Franklin with fur cap, preface by Richard Price (pp. v-ix), contents to Volume I, 317 pp. Life of Dr. Franklin, as written by himself, Continuation of his Life by Dr. Stuber, Extracts from his Will, followed by 1-page erratum with 3 errata listed (one of the points of the first edition). Volume II, 268 pp. Engraved title and portrait uniform with Volume I. Collection of his most famous essays. This work was a re-translation from the French, supplemented by Dr. Stuber's account of Franklin's life. It was to become the "standard" for the work until Bigelow's edition of 1868. In exquisite presentation box designed to match the volumes with two separate shelves, near matching antique marble, half calf, 6 compartments, raised ridges, leather spine label. Antique bookplate of Lee Warner Esq., spine leather of books worn, corners bumped. Light foxing to title and prelims, pages clean, hinges solid. Just about near fine in new extraordinary presentation box.
